What ADA compliance means for a website

WCAG 2.2 AAthe standard courts and the DOJ point to

The Americans with Disabilities Act does not list website rules, but courts and the Department of Justice consistently point to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, currently WCAG 2.2 at level AA, as the standard. In practice that means your site has to work for people using screen readers, keyboards instead of a mouse, zoom, captions and high contrast.

Roughly one in four American adults lives with a disability. A site that works for them is also better for everyone else: clearer structure, readable text, forms that explain their errors, videos with captions. Search engines read a site much the way a screen reader does, so accessibility work tends to help rankings too.

We do the work in the code. No overlay widget, no toolbar that claims to fix everything and has been named in lawsuits itself.

How we audit

Every page tested against WCAG 2.2 AA, by hand and by tool

Automated scanners catch about a third of accessibility issues: missing alt text, low contrast, unlabeled form fields. The rest only show up when someone actually tries to use the site with a keyboard or a screen reader.

We do both. Every template is run through automated checks, then navigated with a keyboard only and with a screen reader, and the findings are logged against the WCAG success criterion they fail.

  1. Keyboard-only passevery menu, form and modal reachable without a mouse
  2. Screen reader passheadings, labels, link text and image descriptions read correctly
  3. Contrast and motioncolour pairs measured, animations respect reduced-motion settings

What We Audit

Twelve areas every ADA audit covers

Automated scanners catch about a third of real issues. The rest need a person testing with a keyboard and a screen reader.

  • Colour contrast on text, buttons and links
  • Keyboard navigation and visible focus order
  • Screen reader labels on buttons, links and icons
  • Alt text on every meaningful image
  • Form labels, instructions and error messages
  • Heading structure and page landmarks
  • Video captions and audio transcripts
  • Link text that makes sense out of context
  • Motion, animation and auto-playing content
  • Zoom to 200% without loss of content
  • PDF and document accessibility
  • Mobile touch target size and spacing

Why aStash

Compliance done by the people who build the site

Fixed in the code

Remediation is done in your theme and templates, so it stays fixed when you add a page, instead of a script patching symptoms.

Documentation that protects you

An audit report, a remediation log and a public accessibility statement show good-faith effort, which matters if a demand letter arrives.

Tested with real assistive tech

Every fix is verified with a keyboard, VoiceOver and NVDA, not just a browser extension.

Kept compliant

Quarterly re-scans and a manual review when the site changes, so compliance does not expire with the next redesign.

Why it matters

Usable by everyone, defensible if anyone asks

What you get

Fixes in the code, documentation you can show

We remediate in the theme and templates, so the fix applies to every page that uses them, including pages you add later. No overlay script, no toolbar, nothing that a lawsuit has already named.

At the end you receive an accessibility statement for the site, a record of what was tested and fixed, and a short guide so your team keeps new content compliant.

FAQ

Straight answers before you call.

Anything else? (970) 399-9004 reaches a person in Fort Collins, not a call center.

Is my small business website legally required to be ADA compliant?

Courts have repeatedly applied the ADA to websites of businesses open to the public, and most lawsuits target small businesses. Compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA is the accepted way to show you meet the obligation.

Do accessibility overlay widgets make my site compliant?

No. Overlays patch symptoms in the browser, often make screen reader use worse and have not stopped lawsuits. Several overlay vendors’ customers have been sued while using them.

How long does remediation take?

Two to six weeks for most small business sites, depending on page count, templates and how many PDFs and videos need work.

Will the fixes change how my site looks?

Rarely in a way visitors notice. Contrast adjustments, focus outlines and clearer form labels are the most visible changes, and they usually improve the design.

Can you make a site compliant if you did not build it?

Yes. We audit and remediate WordPress and most other platforms. If the theme is fundamentally inaccessible we will tell you and quote a rebuild instead.

What does it cost?

A flat audit fee, then a flat remediation price based on what the audit finds. Monitoring is an optional small monthly or quarterly add-on.
